What is a REALTOR® ?
The term REALTOR® is a registered collective membership mark. Only real estate licensees who are members of the National Association of REALTORS® , a real estate trade association, are called REALTORS®. They are authorized to display the REALTOR® logo on their business cards or other marketing and sales literature. REALTORS® subscribe to a strict Code of Ethics and are expected to maintain a higher level of knowledge of the process of buying and selling real estate.
What is MLS?
REALTORS® belong to their local Board of REALTORS® Multiple Listing Service (MLS). MLS is a computerized network listing all homes for sale in an area. Member brokers post their listings in the MLS and cooperate with other brokers in the purchase or sale of properties. Agents pay for and are granted password access to their local MLS and can use the service to find properties in a particular price range or area and other related information. They can show those properties and offer them for sale.
Initials after the name of a REALTOR® means the REALTOR® participates in one or more affiliated Institutes, Societies, and Councils of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® that offer specialized education and professional designation programs. REALTORS® who participate in NAR's various affiliated organizations learn special skills to help you, the consumer, with your unique real estate needs.
Leadership Training Graduate Designation
The Leadership Training Graduate (LTG) designation is awarded by the Women's
Council of REALTORS (WCR) and is the only recognition of professional leadership skills offered in the REALTOR® community. With a core focus on personal and professional development, the LTG designation provides recognition to professionals who excel in career leadership through the dynamic combination of education and experience. The combination of training and experience cultivates a distinctive, well-rounded real estate professional who is ready to
move to the next level.
The ABR® Designation
The Accredited Buyer Representative designation is the benchmark of excellence in buyer representation. This coveted designation is awarded to real estate practitioners by the Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council (REBAC) of the National Association of REALTORS® who meet the specified educational and practical experience criteria.
The Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR®) designation is held by more than 9,000 REALTORS® who work as buyer's agents. A buyer's agent represents the buyer's best interests in a real estate transaction, just as a seller's agent represents the seller to obtain the price and sale terms sought by the seller. A buyer's agent is hired to get the best possible price and terms for the buyer. Buyer agency assistance also includes a variety of other duties to help bring the transaction to a smooth close. ABR® designees complete an intensive course that covers the legalities and issues surrounding representation as a buyer's agent and must pass a written exam upon completion of the course. The ABR® is the only nationally recognized designation for buyer's agents.
Graduate, REALTOR® Institute
GRI is the nationally recognized symbol of the Graduate REALTORS®
Institute professional designation series. The designation is a mark of distinction that earns REALTORS® the respect and confidence from their peers and the general public. The GRI provides a solid base of real estate fundamentals for members participating in the REALTOR®
Institute program. Members in the residential market earn the designation after completing a 90 hour comprehensive education program covering subjects such as contract law, professional standards, sales and marketing, finance, and risk reduction. Each state customizes and administers a minimum number of classroom training courses to ensure agents have a thorough understanding of how the information applies to the real estate practice in their respective state. In Florida, the program is the foundation for the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) and
Florida Association of REALTORS® (FAR) real estate advancement program.
e-PRO Internet Professional
All e-PRO Internet Professionals are REALTORS® who have completed a rigorous certification program endorsed by the prestigious NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (NAR). Real estate agents and brokers who have earned e-PRO Certification are Internet Professionals who have completed extensive training using the Web. e-PRO Certification means the real estate professional is prepared to employ the latest techniques and services for your benefit, just like you've grown to expect from a professional.
